Trekways of the Wind is an English translation of the book Ruoktu Vaimmus which was published in 1985. For Ruoktu Vaimmus Nils-Aslak Valkeapää was nominated for the Nordic Council’s Literature Prize in 1988.
Trekways of the Wind is the first major lyrical work by Nils-Aslak Valkeapää presented to an English reading audience. Trekways of the Wind consists of three books published in 1974, 1976 and 1981. This triology was published in a revised version with new illustrations as Ruoktu Vaimmus in 1985.
In Trekways of the Wind Valkeapää looks at the world with the eye of indigenous people. He travels from Samiland to Inuits on Greenland and the Indians of the Great Plains with his poetry and illustrations, observing and wondering about the values of the Western world and the Indigenous peoples.
Ruoktu Váimmus translated into English by Ralph Salisbury, Lars Nordström and Harald Gaski. Illustrated by the author. This book has become a sami classic.
